Ten Website Basics You Must Follow

February 13, 2009

There’s certain things your business website design HAS to do.  You HAVE to have a website if you’re a business but there are actually things you can do that are almost worse than not having a website at all.  Many of these bad ideas have started to fade away for good, but let’s make sure you’re not hurting your business.

Ten Website Basics:

  1. Fast Loading Website - People on the web have short attention spans.  If your site doesn’t download in just a few seconds, people will leave and look elsewhere.  30 seconds is an eternity on the internet.
  2. You Don’t Need a Splash Page - Why do you need one?  Really?  To show of a 30 second animation of your logo?  To force your customers to click through a useless page to get to what they’re looking for?
  3. Stay Away from Gimmicks – You ought to know better than to have some flashing images on your page.  Or useless repeating animations.  Or annoying popups. Or a loud, intrusive soundtrack that sends users looking for the volume.
  4. Have a Clear Message - It’s possible someone may have found your site through a link somewhere and don’t know who you are or what you do.  Don’t make them guess.
  5. Consistent Design – Seems like common sense but don’t have your site design change around from page to page.  Keep the navigation in the same place throughout the site.
  6. Simple Navigation - It should be placed on the left or top of page.  That’s standard.  Put the most important pages closer to the front of your navigation bar or list.  Make sure the names of each link are clear as to what it leads to.
  7. No Under Construction Signs - Noone wants to see that.  If you have to, this is the place for a temporary splash page with your logo, list of services and contact information. At least there’s something useful then.  Include your site’s launch date as well and maybe even an email signup so they can be notified when it goes live.
  8. Contact Information - Shouldn’t have to say this but don’t forget your contact info! And don’t just put it as an image, include it as text as well in case your visitor can’t see your images displayed correctly.
  9. Business Hours – If you have a brick and mortar location, you HAVE to post your hours.
  10. Locations – Again, you must include info for your physical location. 30% of all your site visitors only come to your site to get either your hours or contact information or location.  You should consider placing these things on every page if possible.

If you’re looking for a custom website design then please contact us.  We would also be happy to give you a FREE website analysis of your current site.

Beaver Shredding Mobile Paper Shredding Services

February 10, 2009

Identity theft has become more common in the last several years and I’m sure you’ve seen horror stories from victims on the news.  Usually the victims are individuals but increasingly the targets are businesses.

Criminals have realized that it’s much more worthwhile to go through documents in the trash at an office complex then the trashcans in front of a persons residence.  One dumpster at an office building could yield dozens, perhaps hundreds of names, addresses, social security numbers and maybe even credit card information.

Imagine the damage to your business if it was your company who was responsible for leaking this information.  You have angry customers.  You’ll probably be in the newspaper, maybe even on TV.  They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but is that true if you’re responsible for hundreds of customers sensitive information being stolen?

The best way to keep that sensitive information safe is to destroy it when you’re finished.  Even better is to ensure it is destroyed by a professional document destruction company.

Beaver Shredding is a Chicago paper shredding company that provides the secure destruction and disposal of paper, documents and data.  Their mobile document shredding services include the destruction and disposal of everything you need to get rid of.

Contact Beaver Shredding for information about their products and services.  They offer several options from pickup, to on-site destruction and secure disposal units and more.

Get Everyone Involved in Your Site Redesign

January 30, 2009

Finally decided to do a website redesign?  Contgratulations!  I’ve got a surefire way to improve the effectiveness of your new site.  Get everyone involved!

Getting a lot of people involved in the design of your site can cause the issue of “too many cooks in the kitchen”, meaning letting everyone contribute can get messy if there’s not a “master chef” in charge of making the final decision an keeping everyone from stepping on toes.

The advantage is that everyone in your company really can contribute.  Every employee has a specialty and knows their part of the business.  Each employee solves problems, answers questions and creates solutions.

Sales staff has great insight into your customers.  They probably answere the same questions all the time.  Put the answers to those questions right on the website!  Shipping and receiving could help you with the ordering and shipping process.  The boss has “big picture” skills and lots of knowledge.  Billing could be encountering the same problem frequently which could be easily solve.

And of course, don’t forget to ask your customers what they want out of your website!  Your design team may think the site is great but be sure to test drive the site with people who actually have to use it.

The point is, everyone CAN and SHOULD contribute.  Your employees need to be engaged to make the site better and so do your customers.  This will help you get the best new website design and hosting package for your business.

Improving Your Home Page for More Conversions

January 27, 2009

Sometimes your website doesn’t need a redesign but it does need some work.  It’s kind of like how you can increase the value of a house with a fresh coat of paint and some landscaping.  Whether it’s purpose is to generate business, sales, leads or  sign-ups, there’s a good chance that it could be optimized to boost those conversions.  You can increase your sales even if you don’t have an E-Commerce site and you can increase your conversions without a major site overhaul.

A conversion is when you get a site visitor to take a desired action.  It’s not the same thing on every site, as some websites are designed to sell products online and others are meant to collect emails with your list builder or input contact info so that a sales rep can do a follow up call.  Either way, the conversion is the desired act of that site visitor.

Sometimes all your site needs is the content reorganized to make the important areas of the website more prominant.  These could include things such as:

  • Increase the size or prominance of your sign-up button
  • Move calls to action to “Above the Fold”
  • Make it clear that your E-commerce functions are secure
  • Make it clear that you don’t share your email list
  • Clearly articulated value or selling proposition
  • Links to “Learn More” pages from a list of features

Not everything on a website requires a major re-design.  Sometimes your content just needs to be optimized for the sale.

For more usability suggestions contact one of our design consultants at Axcel Internet for a free consultation and site evaluation.

Free Website Analysis

January 26, 2009

Do you wonder if your site is operating as well as it could be?  Is the code of the site functioning correctly.  How are the load in times?  Is it user friendly enough?  Are there problems that appear obvious to the trained eye?

How would you like an experienced website consultant to examine your website for free?

Axcel Internet Technologies, a leading Chicago website design company is offering a free analyisis of your website. Axcel will provide a detailed, objective assessment of your website’s design and usability.

Sometimes it takes another set of eyes to look at something objectively.  You’ve seen your site a million times and know where everything is and how to find what you’re looking for.

But what about your customers?  Can THEY find what they’re looking for?  That’s a very common problem.  To people at a company, it seems obvious where everything is, but to first time visitors they might find your site confusing.  People have short attention spans on the internet and if they don’t find what they’re looking for in 30 seconds they will leave your site.

Can your site pass the 30 second test?  I should be able to look at the main page of your site and be clear on where all the content and sections of your site are immediately.  It seems easy but you would be surprised how difficult it can be to find the most important content on some websites.

There could also be code on your website which is hindering the rankings of your website.  Perhaps your page titles are not optimized.  Maybe your content could be better optimized for search engines.  Your site could be a candidate for search engine optimization to improve it’s positioning in the major search engines.  This is another aspect we will analyze your site for and we can also run a free search engine ranking report if you’d like to show you where your site ranks in the top three search engines.

Contact Axcel Internet today for a free website analysis report.
